Can I bury the tubing in my Raindrip system?

Yes. Tubing may be buried underground or under decorative covering, such as wood chips or pine straw. The emitters themselves cannot be buried under soil, but can be covered with a decorative covering of woodchips or pine straw.

Can I leave it in place year-round?

Yes. As Raindrip drip watering systems are permanent, they can and should be left in place all year. If you live in an area subject to freezing, we recommend draining your system at the end of each season and storing certain components – please review Maintenance Help for an overview of this simple process.

How long will my Raindrip system last?

Raindrip tubing and emitters can last up to 15 years even when used daily. In the U.S., most people move before their drip watering system wears out.

Can I connect my system to a garden hose?

Yes! Connect to the end of any typical garden hose to reach more remote areas of your yard. Stop standing around spraying water; go and enjoy life and let us handle the watering for you.

Can I connect to my sprinkler system?

Yes. Connect to any standard sprinkler riser (the part sticking out of the ground) with an adapter or conversion device. For more information, please visit Converting an Existing System.

Can I connect to my outdoor faucet (hose bib)?

Yes. With hose-threaded adapters, you can connect to virtually any standard faucet outside your house.

Can I use a timer?

Absolutely. Raindrip sells both analog and digital timers that connect easily and automate your system. In fact, using a timer is highly recommended to avoid over-watering or accidentally forgetting to water.

What is an anti-syphon device, and do I need one as part of my drip watering system?

An anti-siphon device is an optional system component that can be used at the point-of-connection in an irrigation system. The purpose of this device is to prevent the water being used to irrigate your landscape from flowing back into the clean water supply of your home, as this could contaminate your water supply.

An anti-siphon device is typically a standard health code requirement and comes pre-installed on many newer homes. While this device is not required for your drip watering system to function, we always recommend adhering to clean water practices, so check with your local authorities regarding health code requirements in your area.

What is a system flush, and why is it necessary?

When working on your system, it’s important to ensure that dirt and debris are kept out – this is the single most important aspect of system maintenance, as the dirt has the potential to clog your filter or emitter devices.

Follow the steps below to flush your system:

  1. Remove any end caps or end clamps you may have installed – this will allow the water to flow through the entire system and “flush” any unwanted particles.
  2. Turn on the water and let clean water flow through the system without obstruction. Continue flushing until the water runs clear
  3. While the water is still running, close off the ends by replacing the end caps or end clamps.

How do I “winterize” my drip irrigation system?

As water expands when it freezes, it’s important to drain your drip system prior to winter if you live in an area that is subject to freezing. In addition to this, It is recommended to drain your system by simply removing the hose end clamps or plugs terminating the mainline supply tubing. It is also recommended to bring any timers or controllers indoors during this same period. Be sure to replace the batteries when reinstalling your timer. See ‘Maintenance Help’ for more information on getting your drip system prepared for winter.

What is a “smart” timer/controller and how is it different from a traditional irrigation timer?

A “smart” timer/controller operates and programs in the same manner as a traditional timer but automatically adjusts watering times after initial installation based on live weather conditions. For example, a smart timer will delay watering during rain or periods of lower temperature. In addition, a smart timer can save up to 30% on your water usage by fine tuning your watering schedule.

The Raindrip WeatherSmart Pro is a smart irrigation timer that easily programs using your ZIP code information and includes a Wireless Weather Station which captures live on-site weather information. The WeatherSmart Pro has completed the Irrigation Association’s Smart Water Application Technologies (SWAT) performance testing and may qualify for rebate incentive programs. Check with your local water authority for rebate availability and qualifying product information. For more information, please visit the WeatherSmart Product Page.
